How to Handle a Lost Filling or Crown
Dental emergencies are always a shock. After the surprise of the accident wears off, you may fine you don’t know exactly what do after losing a filling or crown. There are some steps you can take, though, that will help your dentist fix your issue quickly and efficiently without complicated cosmetic dentistry procedures.
Cover the Cavity
Cavities are painful and sensitive areas of your teeth, even years after your dentist filled in the gap. Unfortunately, when your filling falls out, that pain is likely to return. To keep other bacteria from entering the filled area of your tooth, it’s best to fill in the hole until you can see your dentist. The best way to do this is by using dental cement, which can be purchased at a Vancouver drug store. If this option isn’t possible, you can also use sugarless gum. Avoid any gums with sugar as they will cause severe pain.
Recover the Crown
If a tooth’s crown falls off, the most important step is to find and save the crown. If you can’t see a dentist immediately and are experiencing discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers or coat the tooth with clove oil using a Q-Tip. This is available at local drug or grocery stores. If you can, it’s also helpful to put the crown back onto the tooth. To get it to stick, you can use dental cement or toothpaste.
See Your Dentist
If you lose a filling or crown, it’s important to see a dentist as quickly as possible. While other solutions are only temporary, your dentist will offer a permanent solution. Without seeing a dentist right away, you risk further complicating your dental health or causing additional damage to the area.
