Signs That You May Be Suffering From Gum Disease

    Last updated 1 year ago

Are you worried that you may be suffering from the initial stages of gum disease? In addition to seeking the help of a dentist in your area, read through the following overview of gum disease symptoms for a better understanding of the condition and how you can tell when you have it.

    Gum Disease Basics
Gum disease, commonly referred to as periodontal disease by those in the dental field, is a persistent bacterial infection of the gums and the bone beneath the teeth. It is caused by the excessive buildup of plaque and tartar along the gum line, which itself leads to the proliferation of oral bacteria. Gum disease can be further categorized into gingivitis and periodontitis, with the latter referring to an advanced and much more serious form of the infection.

    Signs and Symptoms
The initial signs of gum disease are associated with gingivitis, and include:

    • Redness and swelling of the gums.
    • Bleeding at the gum line.
    • Receding gums.
    • Halitosis, or bad breath.
    • Discomfort and tenderness.

    Worsening Symptoms and Possible Complications
If the initial symptoms of gum disease are left untreated, the dental infection can progress to periodontitis. When this happens, patients are likely to experience:

    • More severe dental discomfort, tenderness, and pain.
    • Abscesses at the gum line.
    • Open sores on the gums and cheeks.
    • Black or grey discoloration of the gums.
    • Severe gum pocketing.
    • Tooth loosening and loss.

At this point, surgery may be required to remove certain teeth that are causing infection to spread. If, however, the condition is allowed to become still more serious, patients may be in danger of infection spreading from dental work throughout the blood stream. This alone can lead to a variety of other life-threatening complications.

Though gum disease cannot be cured if it is allowed to advance to periodontitis, its symptoms and side effects can be avoided with proper maintenance and care. If you suspect you may have gum disease, call Cascade Dental immediately at (360) 213-1999. We can provide you with an accurate diagnosis, and go over your treatment options in greater detail.
